Professional training

Moscow Institute of Chemical Engineering

In 1976–1981, Levan Artilakva studied at the Moscow Institute of Chemical Engineering (MIKhM), a leading Soviet higher education and research centre in chemical engineering machinery, chemical engineering processes and equipment, compressor technology and cryogenic engineering.

He undertook specialized studies under Professor Alexander Adolfovich Gukhman.

At various times, distinguished scientists taught and headed academic departments at MIKhM: Nobel laureate and Academician Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa; Academicians Ivan Ivanovich Artobolevsky, Mikhail Viktorovich Kirpichev, Anatoly Maksimovich Kutepov and Yakov Mikhailovich Kolotyrkin; Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Viktor Vyacheslavovich Kafarov; and Professors Alexander Adolfovich Gukhman, Alexander Nikolaevich Planovsky, Georgy Lvovich Vikhman, Alexander Nikolaevich Sherstyuk, Viktor Mikhailovich Brodyansky and Vladimir Andreevich Yudin. Their scientific schools shaped the development of chemical engineering machinery, engineering thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, cryogenic engineering, the theory of machines and mathematical modelling of chemical engineering processes.

His studies at MIKhM gave Levan Artilakva a fundamental engineering education and provided the foundation for his subsequent work in high-energy and high-temperature chemistry, compressor technology and the modernization of industrial plants.

Professor Alexander Adolfovich Gukhman

According to Levan Artilakva’s biographical information, at MIKhM he undertook specialized studies under Professor Alexander Adolfovich Gukhman, the renowned Soviet physicist, a founder of similarity theory, which made it possible to substantially simplify the mathematical description of physical processes and generalize experimental results, and author of the fundamental monograph “On the Foundations of Thermodynamics”, devoted to the logical justification of the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and the systematic development of the thermodynamic method. Thermodynamics, analysis of specific physical processes and the application of engineering methods to non-standard industrial problems have a significant place in Levan Artilakva’s professional work.
